With the end of 2018 upon us, we are currently seeking nominations for the following CincyIP positions.

Officers

The following officers will serve a 2-year term (2019-2021):

We are also seeking nominations for four board members, each of whom will serve a three-year term.

Functional Language in Patent Claims

Daniel Hegner will speak on the convergence of federal court and PTAB decisions questioning functional language in patent claims. Mr. Hegner will address evolving challenges to functional claiming, tips for taking advantage of U.S. law permitting functional language, and functional-claiming pitfalls to avoid.

About the Speaker:

Mr. Hegner is a Member and IP attorney at Bejin Bieneman PLC. Much of his patent experience pertains to preparation and prosecution of electrical, software, and mechanical applications in the fields of automotive connectivity and safety systems, autonomous vehicle control, fuel system, mobile telecommunications, light and optical devices, small engine carburetors, and defense industry special projects.

Outside of his practice, Mr. Hegner has been an avid participant in World IP Day Detroit, serving three consecutive years as an executive organizer of the annual event, which creates public awareness on a broad range of IP issues.

Judges’ Dinner: feat. Kira Alvarez, ABA IP Section Legislative Consultant

Please join us October 25th at the Queen City Club for our annual Judges’ Dinner, featuring Kira Alvarez, ABA IP Section Legislative Consultant.

Ms. Alvarez will speak to the ABA’s proposed legislation addressing Patentable Subject Matter under § 101 (available here) and hold a brief open discussion regarding the merits of the proposal.  Any feedback you have would be most appreciated.

Cocktail hour will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will start at 6 p.m. Ms. Alvarez’s address will be given toward the conclusion of dinner.
